5 Techniques to Stay Positive in the Age of Disruption

The Age of Disruption is nothing new as it is used to describe the world today that is full of changes. However, what to take note of is what comes with it, which includes new technologies that are transforming businesses that can be both useful and frightening at the same time such as ChatGPT. Employees may have mixed feelings about AI whether it will make work easier for them or make them lose their jobs. This worry combined with other problems in everyday life can lead to negative energy. Therefore, in order to create positive energy to be able to cope with the Age of Disruption, we recommend the following 5 techniques.

1. Understand

The first thing you should do is understand what is within your control and what is beyond your control. This concept can be applied in every situation no matter how much time passes. The source of worry, fear or negative thoughts often comes from us trying to control what we can’t control. In today’s world where things change rapidly, there may be a constant pressure to keep up with the world. If you can do it and are able to do it quickly, that’s great. However, if you need more time to adjust, that is also fine because everyone has their own pace. As long as you want to keep moving forward, it is a good first step to start with.

2. Develop Growth Mindset

Growth mindset is a way of viewing things in a more open-minded and accepting manner. Those with this mindset is adaptive to changes, thrive on challenges, and devote their time and effort to develop themselves, which is important in today’s world. Anyone can develop growth mindset but it takes practice, which you can start by asking yourself this question everyday, especially when problems and challenges arise whether in personal life or at work, ‘Did you gain something from this experience?’ If your answer is that you learn an important lesson or something new, then you are on the right track. Once you are able to adjust your mindset, an action will follow, which in this case, is doing something to improve yourself. 

3. Identify Your Strengths

It depends on the context of your life and work regarding which skills are necessary for you to develop or enhance on. Sometimes, it may be necessary for you to work on the skills that are not your strengths to meet the demand of a more challenging task or build on your strengths to perform even better at your work. Nonetheless, if you are able to identify what you strengths are, it will save you more time as your are building on something that you already have a foundation in, which can help you reach your peak performance easier and feel more confident at your job. Try listing out your strengths, which the examples are being organized, diligent, responsible, and so on. You can also try asking someone who knows you well.

4. Expand Knowledge and Skills 

To keep up with the world, having a thirst for knowledge is important in order to up-skill and re-skill as well as continuing to further enhance on strengths, along with acquiring additional knowledge and developing necessary skills to become a more well-rounded person. There are several ways to do this, which may include volunteering for tasks that are outside of your comfort zone, taking online courses, joining certain clubs that can help you improve certain skills such as English, public speaking, and so on. Also, don’t forget to allocate time so you have time to actually develop these skills, which may be during breaks, after work, or on weekends.

5. Exchange Experience

The advantage of talking and sharing experiences with others is about being able to gain knowledge that comes from others’ direct experience, which may include good advice, practical guideline, and inspiration to start developing yourself. In addition, talking to other people can also be a good stress reliever as you get to share your thoughts and feelings (it is important to choose who you talk to as some people may you even more stress), especially if you meet someone who is having the same or similar problem as you, it might make you feel less alone.

Try applying these 5 techniques and see which ones work best for you. There may be things in life that can’t be controlled, so try to focus on what you can control, which is yourself. Start by adjusting your mindset first, then an appropriate action will follow. Just like changes in the world, you can also grow and change for the better. You just have to be open to learning new things to expand your horizon. Doing so will help you catch up with the world faster.
